"At King Charles, we believe that Science is essential for all pupils to be inquisitive and explore the world around them, and understand their place in the world. Children will think critically and solve problems to ensure lifelong learning and ambitious outcomes for their futures."
SEND
Within science lessons, teachers aim to provide activities to support children who find mathematics challenging. Children with SEND are taught within science lessons with their peers and are encouraged to take part when and where possible. Where applicable, children’s Individual Profiles will be taken into consideration by teachers when planning science to allow these targets to be met. When educational support staff are available to support groups or individual children, they work collaboratively with the class teacher. The support teacher feeds back to the class teacher when appropriate to inform evaluations, assessment and future planning. SEND children also have the opportunity throughout the year to take part in appropriate Intervention programmes that support them further, fill in any gaps in their understanding and enable them to reach their full potential. In order to provide all pupils with relevant and appropriate work at each stage: We plan suitable learning challenges that are well scaffolded, not different. Staff endeavour to overcome potential barriers to learning through quality teaching and intervention as required.
End of Unit Quizzes, will also ensure that appropriate adaptations are made to allow SEND pupils to perform to the best of their abilities (e.g. quizzes are read aloud, coloured overlays are provided, additional time is given, adult scribing answers). Quizzes may also be provided in alternative format to paper, such as Google Forms.
Additional Teaching/ Interventions
Where applicable, children will be identified and supported with their progress through the pre-teach of scientific vocabulary and targeted post-teach work with an adult to address misconceptions. General class misconceptions are addressed through the ‘sticky knowledge’ section of the following science lesson.
