"At King Charles, we understand the importance of fostering a love of reading, after all it underpins everything we do every day of our lives. Our vision is for every child within our school to develop a love of reading; a good knowledge of a range of authors, genres and text-types; and, to be able to understand more about the world in which they live through the knowledge they gain from texts. These texts should encompass the best that has been thought and written."
Library
Our school library sits at the heart of our school community, greeting every visitor and member of our school family as they step through our doors. It is a safe and welcoming space where our children can lose themselves in the magical worlds of books and let their imaginations soar.
Our shelves are brimming with a wide range of genres, from graphic novels and humorous tales to timeless classics, catering to all interests and reading levels. Our collection is thoughtfully curated and regularly updated by our passionate school reading ambassadors and librarian, ensuring there is always something new and exciting to discover.
Our unique school reading tree warmly welcomes everyone, offering audiobooks that transport listeners straight into the heart of the stories. It is a beloved feature that fosters a love for reading in a truly inclusive and accessible way.
The library is open during lunchtimes, ensuring our children have constant access to this inspiring space. Additionally, each class enjoys weekly or fortnightly dedicated library slots, providing every child the opportunity to explore and engage with our extensive collection of books.
Our library is more than just a room filled with books; it is a vibrant hub of creativity, discovery and learning and we are proud to call it the heart of our school.
Encouraging a Love for Reading Through Daily ERIC Time
At our school, fostering a love for reading is a core part of our mission. Every child enjoys daily opportunities to immerse themselves in books during dedicated ERIC (Everybody Reading In Class) time sessions. This quiet and focused time allows children to explore stories, information and ideas that ignite their imaginations and curiosity.
ERIC time is more than just a reading session; it’s a vital part of our commitment to nurturing a lifelong passion for reading. By making reading a daily habit, we encourage children to develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment of books.
This daily practice not only enhances reading fluency and comprehension but also supports our vision of reading for pleasure. Whether diving into a gripping novel, laughing at a funny story or exploring fascinating facts, our children discover the joy and excitement that books can bring.

Developing Strong Readers Through Whole Class Reading
At King Charles, whole class reading is a cornerstone of our approach to developing confident and skilled readers. Through engaging and carefully planned sessions, we teach key reading strategies that empower children to approach texts with curiosity, critical thinking and understanding.
Our whole class reading lessons focus on the following strategies:
Prediction-Based Questioning: Encouraging our children to make informed predictions about a text, fostering anticipation and active engagement with what they read.
Questioning: Teaching our children to ask and answer questions about the text, deepening comprehension and encouraging analytical thinking.
Clarifying: Helping our children to identify and resolve any words, phrases or ideas they find challenging, ensuring they gain a clear understanding of the text.
Summarising: Developing the ability to condense key ideas and themes, aiding retention and understanding of the text's main points.
Activating Prior Knowledge: Encouraging our children to connect the text to their own experiences or previously learned information, enhancing engagement and contextual understanding.
These strategies are interwoven into every whole class reading session, ensuring that children are not only reading but also interacting with texts in a meaningful and purposeful way. By building these essential skills, we aim to develop thoughtful, reflective and enthusiastic readers who can approach any text with confidence and enjoyment.
